Ask a client to authorise you
You need your client's authorisation before you can deal with HMRC on their behalf. Your client can give their authorisation online by using a link from HMRC. You can request this link on HMRC's website or by using Onvio. Alternatively, you can ask your client to complete a paper form.
Before you begin
- You will need a Government Gateway ID and password.
- You will need to be registered by HMRC as an agent and be enrolled for each service you want to use. You do this by setting up an HMRC Agent Services Account. When this account is created, you will receive an Agent Reference Number.
- You will need a current authorisation from HMRC to use Onvio with your Agent Reference Number.
Use Onvio to get an authorisation link from HMRC
- In Onvio Centre, select Setup > Clients from the menu bar.
- Select the General tab. Make sure that a Value Added Tax Number has been entered.
- Select the VAT tab. Make sure that a VAT Registration Date has been added.
- Select the HMRC tab.
- Select Add from the toolbar.
- Select an Agent Reference Number from the list, then select Next.
- Select Create Authorisation Request.
- Copy the link from HMRC.
- Send the link to your client.
- Select Done.
- The status of the authorisation will be shown as either Pending, Authorised, or Rejected. If you want to cancel a pending request, select it, then select Cancel Authorisation Request.
Notes
- An authorisation link from HMRC expires after 14 days. If the link has expired before the client has used it, you will need to request a new link.
- Your client can use their HMRC account to end the authorisation at any time.
