Complete a company formation project: section 1 Corporate Name

Before you start

Before starting a company formation project, you will need to set up the prospective company as a client, then add a company formation project to it.

The company formation project has six sections. Section 1 is about the Corporate Name and Agent Details.

New Company Details

  1. Select Check Name Availability to run the Companies House Company Name Availability Checker.

    Note: Remember to also check the name of the prospective company against the UK Intellectual Property Office trade marks register.

  2. Choose either England & Wales, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland from the the Location of Proposed Registered Office drop-down list.
  3. If the name of the prospective company includes a sensitive word or expression as defined by Companies House guidance, select Yes and carry out the following steps to upload an authorisation, otherwise select No.
  4. If the name of the prospective company is the same as the name of an existing company or Limited Liability Partnership in the same group, select Yes and carry out the following steps to upload a letter of consent, otherwise select No.

    Note: Read the Companies House guidance on Incorporation and names to understand which characters are disregarded when determining if a name is the same as another.

  5. Select Next.

Notes

Companies House will not incorporate the prospective company if its name is the same as or too like another company or LLP, unless the following two conditions are met. 

  • The two companies/LLPs belong to the same group.
  • The subscribers provide Companies House with a letter of consent from the existing company/LLP in the group.

Agent Details

  1. Select Yes if the statement of compliance with the regulations will be made by an agent then follow the steps below to check the agent's details, otherwise select No if the statement will be made by the subscribers.
  2. Select Next.
