Be safe online
Take these steps to help keep your information secure and protect your computers and mobile devices from viruses and malware (malicious software).
- Use strong passwords. Strong passwords are at least eight characters, and they contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Strong passwords don't contain any complete word, your user ID, or any part of your name or your company name. Each time you change your password, choose one that is significantly different from any previous password. And never use the same password that you use for other online accounts.
- Install antivirus programs and apps on your computers and mobile devices. Antivirus software and apps can detect viruses and malware (malicious software) on your computers and mobile devices. After installing antivirus software, set it to download updates automatically and scan for malware and infected files on a regular basis.
- Update your operating system and internet browsers. Application providers release security updates to protect your computers and mobile devices. These updates help to protect your computers and devices from viruses and malicious software.
- Beware of suspicious email messages and websites. Don't open email messages from people you don't know and don't open attachments you weren't expecting. When you download apps and other files from the internet, make sure you recognize the publisher.
